There has been a huge amount of homebrewing inventions in recent times. Some are the same old thing wrapped up in a pretty package (see HopBox). However, there’s a new kickstarter campaign for something a little different. Whether it turns out to be Mr. Beer on steroids or an actual revolution for homebrewers is yet to be seen.
I give you: Brewbarrel. Brewbarrel is unique because it eliminates the most important step of beer brewing, cleaning. The inventors of Brewbarrel describe it as
The main innovation is a single-stage brewing process, allowing the beer to be brewed directly in the keg from which the beer will be tapped later on. This reduces all the cleaning effort and keeps the beer fresh and natural. They also created an easy-to-use web interface where anyone can create customized beer in just three simple steps.
There are a few interesting aspects of this product.
- It’s a one time use kit where sanitization and cleaning are not needed because the entire fermentation is contained in the keg.
- No need to worry about bottling because after fermentation, the kit utilizes a pressure release valve that keeps the product carbonated so it can be poured straight from the keg it fermented in.
- Their website appears interactive allowing you to mix and match up to 30,000 different ingredient possibilities.
How those recipes taste, however, is yet to be seen. Is it going to be the same extract twang that you get with a Mr. Beer kit or something uniquely different? I guess we’ll have to ask the consumer if their kickstarter gets funded.
They have had great success in Germany. They already sold 40,000 kits. Now they are ready to hit the global market. The main source of the kickstarter is to punch up their production for distribution globally (especially in the beer loving U S of A).
